The "Impossible" Ford V-8 Motor

Image
When Henry Ford decided to produce his famous V-8 motor, he chose to build an engine with the entire eight cylinders cast in one block, and instructed his engineers to produce a design for the engine. The design was placed on a paper, but the engineers agreed, to a man, that it was simply impossible to cast an eight-cylinder engine-block in one piece. Ford said, "Produce it anyway." "But," they replied, "it's impossible!" "Go ahead," For commanded, "and stay on the job until you succeed, no matter how much time is required." The engineers went ahead. There was nothing else for them to do, if they were to remain on the Ford staff. Six months went by, nothing happened. Another six months passed, and still nothing happened. Another six months passed, and still nothing happened. The engineers tried every conceivable plan to carry out the orders, but the thing seemed out of the question; "impossible!" At t...

Pandamay! (Why was this expression created!)

Image
I was reading through books recently, browsed several references, some gave me idea and some stimulated my mind to think. Today, I just want to tell you, yes, if you are reading this, it's not an accident! You are meant to read this!  "Whatever you do today, just make sure it's towards living your life and not copying someone else's." The law of association would suggest that you have the right to associate and that there is power in association, you attract the same energy with whom or those you associate yourself with. That is the reason why you somehow feel satisfied after a conversation with someone you've shared your life with. Shared because he/she can relate to your situation and you can relate to his or her situation.  We have under this influence that we neglect to see how it affects us. And for some reason you don't know, you just want to be with that person or those persons again. Some people would label it with the phrase, ...

WHO IS REALLY RESPONSIBLE? HAVE YOU ASKED THIS QUESTION?

Image
Our business in life is not to get ahead of others, but to get ahead of ourselves - to break our own records, to outstrip our yesterdays by today, to do our work with more force than ever before" (Stewart John). If you would like to know who is responsible for most of your troubles, take a look in the mirror. If you could kick the fellow responsible for most of your problems, you wouldnt be able to sit down for three weeks. It's time for us to stay out of our own way. Most of the stumbling blocks people complain about are under their own hats. Louis XIV commented, "There is little that can withstand a man who can conquer himself." The Bible's wisdom counsels. "He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls" (Proverbs 25:28) "Your future depends on many things, but mostly on you" (Frank Tyger). You may succeed if nobody else believes in you, but you will never succeed if you don't b...

What Are You Here For?

Years ago, I spoke in the Dominican Republic for a ministry that works with American kids struggling with behavioral problems, I addressed them several times a day during their spiritual-emphasis week. Early in the week, I met a young student who showed me what Plan A can look like lived out. Lance approached me after one of my teaching sessions and asked if he could talk with me. Later, he shared what had been happening in his life that week. Clearly, God was lighting a fire in his heart. Lance explained that he entered the program not because he was rebellious or had broken the law like many of other kids. His parents asked him to enter the program so he could gain more structure and discipline in his life. "I've gotten a lot of my time here," Lance said, "but now I'm thinking it may be time to go home. I want to help people learn more about God. Maybe I could make a bigger difference in the lives of my old friends. What do you think, Dwight?" ...

It's Not What You Eat, It's What Eats You

Image
When you are stressed or worried, your body secretes a powerful hormone called adrenaline. The effects of adrenaline in the human body can be compared to those of rocket fuel in a missile or nitric oxide in a race car. Adrenaline is shot into your blood to give you an immediate boost of energy or strength in response to fear, excitement or extreme emotion. In other words, it gives you an energy blast to get you going fast. Once when I was jogging, I passed a fenced yard that was the domain of two massive Doberman pinschers. I didn't see the dogs -"flesh-eating canines" would be a more accurate term - as I jogged past the yard. I guess they felt I was jogging too close to their boundary line, so out of nowhere, they charged me, with vicious, blood-curdling barking. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of the two demonic figures fiercely bearing down on me. Adrenaline shot through my body like a bullet through soft cheese. At the time of the attack, it never o...

What Are You Conscious Of?

Image
One sound idea is all that one needs to achieve success. The principles described in this book contain ways and means of creating useful ideas.  When riches begin to come they come so quickly, in such great abundance, that one wonders where they have been hiding all those years. This is an astounding statement, and all the more so when we take into consideration the popular belief that riches come only to those who work hard an long.  When you begin to think and grow rich, you will observe that riches begin with a state of mind, with definiteness of purpose, with little or no hard work. You, and every other person, ought to be interested in knowing how to acquire the state of mind which will attract riches. I spent twenty-five years in research because, I too, wanted to know "how wealthy men become that way." Observe very closely, as soon as you master the principles of this philosophy, and begin to follow the instructions for applying those principles, your...

The Choice Is Yours

Image
In Hawaii, we have a custom of giving leis to one another as an act of hospitality, honor and friendship. A lei is usually made up of flowers strung together and draped around a person's neck. We give leis to say, "Thank you," and we give leis to say, "Goodbye." I love the fragrant flowers of Hawaii. The pikake, the plumeria, the white ginger and the pua kenikeni are my favorites. These beautiful flowers are so pungent that everywhere I turn, the wafting fragrance adds a sense of Polynesian aloha to everything I experience. When I wear one of these leis, every person I meet smells wonderful! It does not matter whether the person is tall or short, happy or sad, coming to me with a complaint or a compliment, they all smell wonderful to me! Or course, this fragrance I enjoy has nothing to do with the person I am with but has everything to do with the lei I am wearing. Attitude is like a lei. Each of us has one, but we have made a choice of what to string...

Are You Indecisive?

Image
Indecision is deadly. Have you ever noticed that some of the most miserable people you know are those who can never make a decision? When the mind is in doubt, it is easily swayed by slight impulses, opening the door to many wrong decisions. Many times indecision causes things to go from bad to worse. The middle of the road is the most dangerous place to be.  We believers should be the most decisive of all people. Leaders should have wills, not wishes. In James 1:8 the Bible says, "A double minded man is unstable in all his ways." An indecisive person allows instability to creep into every area of life. If we don't decide what is important to us, we will do only what is important to others. The greater degree of wishful thinking, the greater degree of mediocrity. Being decisive, being focused, and committing ourselves to the fulfillment of a dream greatly increase our probability of success, while closing door to wrong options. The challenge is to be decisive dr...

A Fifty-Cent Lesson in Persistence

Image
Shortly after Mr. Darby received his degree from the "University of Hard Knocks"  and had decided to profit by his experience in gold mining business, he had the good fortune to be present on an occassion that proved to him that "No" does not necessarily mean no. One afternoon he was helping his uncle grind wheat in an old-fashioned mill. The uncle operated a large farm on which a number of colored child, the daughter of a tenant, walked in and took her place near the door. The uncle looked up, saw the child, and barked at her roughly "What do you want?" Meekly, the child replied, "My mammy say send her fifty cents." "I'll not do it," the uncle retorted, "now you run on home." "Yas sah," the child replied. But she did not move. The uncle went ahead with his work, so busily engaged that he did not pay attention to the child to observe that she did not leave. When he looked up and saw her ...

Excuses! Excuses! Excuses!

People often ask me who my heroes are. One is Wendy Stoker. Wendy attended a Midwest high school and, in her final year, finished just 3.5 points behind first place in girls' diving. She went to an East Coast college, where she took a full load of classes, was on the bowling team, participated in student government and continued her diving. But what I find most spectacular about this young woman is her typing skill. As a college freshman she typed at a "whizzing" - well, sor of - 40 words per minute.  Did I forget to mention Wendy Stoker was born without arms? She types 40 words per minute with her toes.  What is it that causes a person to possess such determination, such courage, such an indomitable spirit? Before I discuss that, let me share with you about another of my heroes. Thomas Alva Edison invented the incandescent lightbulb, the movie camera and the batteries that start our cars. Toward the autumn years of his life, he worked in a modest bu...

God Doesn't Make Photocopies

Image
In a world inhabited by more than six billion people, it would be easy to assume that there's nothing truly unique about you. But there is. You have something that's physically different from any other person who's ever lived. It has belonged to you since you were in your mother's womb, it will remain unchanged throughout your life. It's a small window into God's totally unique design for you. What is it? Your fingerprints. The arches, whorls, and loops on your fingers create a pattern unlike anyone else's. If God took that much care in designing your unique fingerprints, He must intend for you to be different in other ways, too. Crime investigators have long used fingerprints to identify people who were present at a crime scene. And the same trail applies to the unique ministry imprint you leave on the everyday lives of the people of touch. Paul wrote about God's purpose in designing His one body of believers out of many different ...

Today A Reader, Tomorow A Leader

Image
Have you ever noticed there are people you know who are literally at the same place today as they were five years ago? They still have the same dreams, the same problems; the same alibis, the same opportunities, and the same way of thinking. They are standing still in life. It's like their watch stopped five years ago, and so did they. God's will for us is to grow, to continue to learn and improve. The biggest room in our house is always the room for self-improvement. A famous saying reads: "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." I must admit that I am somewhat of a fanatic about this. I hate to have idle time - time in which I am not learning anything. Those around me know that I must always have something to read or to write during any idle moment that might arise. In fact, I try to learn from everyone. From one I may learn what not to do, while from another, I learn what to do. Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long e...

I Will Never Stop Because Men Say No

Image
Long afterward, Mr. Darby recouped his loss many times over, when he made the discovery that desire can be transmutted into gold. The discovery came after he went into the business of selling life insurance. Remembering that he lost a huge fortune because he stopped three feet from gold. Darby profited by the experience in his chosen work, by the simple method of saying to himself, "I stopped three feet from gold , but I never stop because men say 'no' when I ask them to buy insurance." Darby became one of a small group of men who sell over a million dollars in life insurance annually. He owed his "stickability" to the lesson he learned from his "quitability" in the gold mining business. Before success comes in any man's life, he is sure to meet with much temporary defeat, perhaps, some failure. When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and most logical thing to do is to quit. That is exactly what the majority of men do. More than five...

Relationships Are More Important Than Money

Image
Jesus talked about money and relationships in his most famous sermon - the Sermon on the Mount.  â€œNo one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly ...

Share in the Fellowship of the White Belt

Jigoro Kano, the founder of the martial art of judo. Kano's story is a lesson of inspiration and motivation for every student of life. Kano possessed an extraordinary willingness to learn. He sought out the nearly defunct martial jujitsu and modified it to incorporate modern sports principles, creating the art of judo. It became the defense system of the Japanese police and was the first Eastern martial art to be accepted in international competition at Olympics. Kano was so focused on learning improved techniques in all walks of life that he found new and better ways for the island nation of Japan to educate its youth. He became known as the father of modern Japanese education. Kano was well respected in athletic, social and political circles worldwide. Just before he died, this world-renowned martial arts expert called his students together. As they congregated to hear the final words of their judo master, he announced, "When you bury me, do not bury me in a b...

You Are Gifted, Use it!

Image
One of the most neglected areas in many lives is the area of gifts that God has placed within them. It is amazing how some people can devote their entire life to a field of endeavor or a profession that has nothing to do with their inborn talents. In fact, many people spend their lifetime trying to change how God has made them. They ignore God-given abilities while constantly seeking to change their natural makeup. As children of God, we need to recognize our innate gifts, talents and strengths and do everything in our power to build on them. One good thing about God's gifts and calling is that they are permanent and enduring. Romans 11:29 says: "The gifts and calling of God are without repentance." The Greek word translated repentance in this verse means irrevocable. God does not take away His gifts and calling in your life. Even if you've never done anything with them, even if you've failed time and time again, God's gifts and calling are still reside...

Three Feet From Gold

Image
One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat. Every person is guilty of this mistake at one time or another. An uncle of R. U. Darby was caught by the "gold fever" in the gold-rush days, and went west to dig and grow rich. He had never heard of that more gold has been mined from the thoughts of men than has he ever been taken from the earth. He staked a claim and went to work with pick and shovel.  After weeks of labor, he was rewarded by the discovery of of the shining ore. He needed machinery to bring the ore to the surface. Quietly, he covered up the mine, retraced his footsteps to his home in Williamsburg, Maryland, told his relatives and a few neighbors of the "strike." They got together money for the needed machinery, and had it shipped. The uncle and Darby went back to work the mine. The first car of ore was mined and shipped to a smelter. The returns proved they had one of the rich...

Men's Relational Toolbox (Part 2) - The Internal Toolbox

Image
Men are born with an internal toolbox. Internal tools are as important to us men as our toolbox out in the garage. They are so important that if we woke up one day and didn't have these tools, we'd be lost, just as lost as Robert was when he discovered his toolbox had been stolen. Just like a man who once lost his tool pouch. The story played out this way. A female friend of ours had an appointment at the local middle school. She was waiting at the office counter when a man dressed in a suit and tie rushed in. He was breathles, and sweat was dripping off his forehead. In his hand was something large and cumbersome - about the size of a grocery bag. At first our friend couldn't quite make out what it was.  "Here you go," he said as held it up. His tone was similar to the one man uses when he's bagged a five-point buck. But our friend could see that this man wasn't carrying a deer. He held in his hands a large tool pouch overflowing wi...
