Change Your Definition

Image
I want to encourage you today, with the words Wayne Cordeiro in his book "Attitudes that Attract Success" One way to cultivate staying power is to change your definition of an event or circumstance. After all, the way in which you define your circumstances will determine, to a large degree, how you will respond to that event. Consider it all joy, and watch your faith grow. I lived in Eugene, Oregon, for many years. Eugene is known for, among other things, frequent gray skies and rain. Being from Hawaii, the absence of the sun's warm rays on my body took a toll on me, especially during the winter. Believe it or not, I actually resorted to buying a sunlamp one year when I felt I was about to die from a lack of solar exposure! I remember walking to a coffee shop with a friend one November morning when it began to rain. Not looking forward to another rainy day, I complained, "Rain again! I wish it would quit.!" My friend's response surprise...

Love Assignment

Image
In the beginning, God created the world with an infinite amount of diversity. Consider the many different animals, insects, plants and minerals on this planet. Even after so many centuries, we're still making discoveries about God's creation. Then add to that the billions of people who have lived over the course of time - each unique and different from one another. God pulled out all the stops! He used the big box of Crayolas to create the world with endless diversity. No repetition. No duplicates. God made everyone and everything unique. All too often, though, we fail to celebrate the blessing of diversity. Differences challenge us. So, we cluster ourselves in social (and religious) circles of sameness. All of us feel much more at ease when we cloister around people just like us. But how much clearer would people see God's love if we boldly broke out of our clusters and crossed our uncomfortable boundary lines in order to love people not like us? All of u...

See Negative Circumstances As Changing

Image
A few people have said to me, "I understand what you're saying about looking for what's right. But you can't deny that there are problems! There will always be problems. How do you deal with them practically?" Sure, there will be problems, and each problem needs to be addressed. You need to meet them head on and courageously deal with them in a way that honors God and builds biblical character. However, here's a secret that has helped me over the years: When you speak of problems, always speak of them as changing. Someone says, "You have a problem." Your response should be, "Yes, I do, but it's changing!" Someone else says, "Well, you've got financial problems." Your answer? "Yes, but that's changing!" When someone says to you, "Hey, you have a bad marriage." You say, "Yeah, but it's changing!" When someone says, "You've got bad breath." you can reply, "Yea...

Status Quo

Image
Status Quo (Latin for "THE MESS WE'RE IN") Change. I hope this word doesn't scare you, but rather inspires you. Herbert Spencer said, "A living thing is distinguished from a dead thing by the multiplicity of the changes at any moment taking place in it." Change is an evidence of life. It is impossible to grow without change. Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything. The truth is, life is always at some turning point.  What people want is progress, if they can have it without change. Impossible! You must change and recognize that change is your greatest ally. The person who never changes his opinion never corrects his mistakes. The fact is the road to success is always under construction. Yesterday's formula for success is often tomorrow's recipe for failure. Consider what Thomas Watson, the founder of the IBM Corporation, said, "There is a world market for about five computers." Where would IBM be today i...

Believe You Can Change or Believe You're Dead

Image
No one has been given an unalterable attitude. You can change, but it's up to you. Decide now how you want to approach life and develop that kind of attitude. A new attitude doesn't happen on its own. You must develop it, and the sooner you begin the better. Some people hide behind the excuse that they just can't change: "I've been this way since I was a kid, and I'm not about to change now." It's never too late to change! Change is indespensable to growth. If you stop changing, you stop growing. And if you stop growing, you're in trouble! What do you call a tree that has stopped growing? That's right. Dead. It's no different with people. When they stop growing, they start dying. Some people stopped growing years ago. We might not bury them until they have stopped moving, but they really died years ago. You can change your attitude. Thank goodness for one church secretary who was willing to change hers. One morning, a big...
